Not a political statement

I was checking on the White House site tonight for some of the specifics on Obama’s speech to the nation’s schoolchildren tomorrow and came across some great stuff.  There are a plethora of resources and even the code to embed the live speech on your website (see below).

Unfortunately, this speech has received some negative attention, which I find rather disconcerting.  This speech has absolutely nothing to do with politics and everything to do with encouraging our students.  I’ve published the feed of it here, on my classroom blog, and my school’s blog.  Please don’t let a group of people, who disagree with the president’s political views, disrupt or ban a speech that has nothing to do with policy.  Post this speech on your blog, show it to your students, pass it along to others.   Just don’t let someone tell you that you can’t show it.

  1. Hi Mike,

I believe that saying it’s disconcerting is a bit of an understatement. I am absolutely overwhelmed and saddened – that there would be so much ignorance, people would see a speech that encourages students to value their education as “indoctrination.” For parents/schools to not “allow” their children to listen to someone they politically disagree with, speaks to a divide that’s becoming increasingly wider.
